CIO questions · Models & knowledge
Do I need to train AI on my company's data?
The short answer
In most cases, no. Current enterprise data, documents, policies and operational knowledge should usually remain outside model weights and be retrieved at the right moment through context, RAG, tools or governed queries. Fine-tuning makes more sense when the goal is to change behavior, linguistic specialization, output structure or performance on a stable task, not simply to teach frequently changing facts.
Onni treats knowledge, models and capabilities as separate assets. Knowledge evolves without retraining models, and models change without losing institutional intelligence.
How to decide
- Facts that change → retrieve them (RAG, tools, governed queries)
- Stable behavior, format or style → consider fine-tuning
- Hard rules → a deterministic engine
The Onni principle
Your model is not your knowledge.
The architecture behind it
